Vigiriega

White variety also known as Vijariego Blanco, Bujariego or Diego (and Derijadiego, Vijiriego or Vujariego). Before phylloxera, in the last quarter of the 19th century, it was widely grown across Andalusia; afterwards it was reduced to the Canary Islands (El Hierro and Tenerife) and Granada (Sierra de la Contraviesa, in the Alpujarra). A very vigorous, trailing, resistant and highly productive vine, with few medium-sized, loose bunches of plump berries; the almost round, whitish-green grape was long valued as a table grape. Its juice is rich in sugars and acidity, and especially suited to natural sparkling wine; the wines show green apple, pear, citrus and fennel notes depending on ripeness. In the Canary Islands, 16th-century sources cite «Vejeriego» among the white cultivars (with Listán, Verdello or Verdejo) blended to make «vidueño» or «wine of all grapes» (Álvarez Santos et al., AVIBO, 2025). In the Canary Islands, Vijariego Blanco/Diego (= Andalusia's Vijiriega Común, according to ICIA) is grown significantly in Lanzarote, with presence in La Palma and Tenerife; it ripens late and keeps high acidity (7 g/l) despite being a warm-climate variety, giving golden wines of medium alcohol (Rodríguez-Torres, ICIA, 2017).
