Mantúo de Pilas
Marco de Jerez · Western Andalusia
Minor white variety, also known as Mantúo, Uva Rey or Montúa (and Chelva in Extremadura); genetic markers show it descends from a cross of Hebén × Dedo de Dama. Clemente (1807) records it in many vineyards of Sanlúcar and in “entire patches” in Jerez, mostly on sandy soils, and in El Puerto de Santa María, Arcos and Espera, where the bunches were also kept hanging. Today it survives in scattered plots (Doña Mencía, Estepona, Morón de la Frontera) and there are no surface-area figures. In IFAPA trials in Jerez it ripens two to three weeks after Palomino fino, yields about 50% less and gives musts with high pH and low total acidity, and wines of lower alcohol (10.8% vol.) with more malic acid. The same IFAPA survey identified one vine in the Alpujarra of Granada; there is interest in registering it in the Commercial Varieties Register and authorising it in Andalusia (Cretazzo et al., 2023).
