Baboso Negro

It can appear on all the islands, with more importance in Tenerife and El Hierro. It is known as Albarín Negro on the mainland and Alfrocheiro Preto in Portugal. Because of its small, tight bunch of small black berries it is confused with Bastardo Negro and Tintilla, but they are three different varieties. Low yield (bunch of about 93 g), late ripening (early to mid-September) and high acidity (8.2 g/l at Valle de Guerra): wines of high colour and aromatic intensity, with very sugar-rich musts, so sweet red wines are made from it. One of the most renowned varieties of the Canary Islands; it is a probable parent of Gual.
