Baix Empordà: wine raised with the Tramontana
Between the Gavarres massif and the Mediterranean, where Catalonia's most famous wind is not a nuisance but the vineyard's health ally.
Two regions, one same wind
The DO Empordà spreads across 48 municipalities split between the Alt Empordà — from Figueres to the French border, sheltered under the Rodes and Albera ranges — and the Baix Empordà, bounded by the Montgrí and Gavarres massifs and the Mediterranean coast. Our wines come from this second half: mostly sandy soils poor in organic matter, from sea level up to 260 metres, ideal for concentration.
The climatic feature that defines everything is the Tramontana: a north wind that often exceeds 120 km/h. Far from being a problem, it keeps the vines dry and aired, drastically reducing the risk of fungus and disease. Combined with mild winters, summers tempered by the sea breeze and about 600 litres of annual rainfall, the Baix Empordà offers almost ideal conditions for minimal-intervention viticulture.
Celler de Madremanya: the Follaraïms line
Celler de Madremanya works in the Empordà with native varieties and no added sulphites. Its Follaraïms line —Negre, Brisat and Rosat— is the expression of this natural wine project: local grapes, spontaneous fermentations and as little intervention as possible, letting the wind and the sandy soil do most of the work.
Gusts of up to 120 km/h that keep the vines dry and healthy, with no need for treatments.
