The Terres dels Alforins: the wine heart of the Vall d'Albaida

Between Ontinyent, Moixent and Fontanars dels Alforins lies the Terres dels Alforins, a subzone of the D.O. Valencia between 450 and 750 metres altitude. Calcareous, sandy-loam soils, dry summers and cool nights: ideal conditions for minimal-intervention viticulture with natural acidity and no need for correction.

This territory is little known outside the Valencian Community but is home to some of the most interesting projects in Spanish natural wine: century-old wineries converted to organic farming, the recovery of almost-extinct native varieties, and winemaking in clay jars in a tradition dating back to Roman times.

Terroir Radical has its roots in Ontinyent. It's not a geographical accident: it's the starting point for a selection built from first-hand knowledge of the territory.

Cos a Cos, by Cristóbal Vanyó

The project that best embodies that origin is Terres dels Alforins. Cristóbal Vanyó —a teacher by profession and a climber— made his first barrel in 2015. He trained in the Terra Alta, alongside Laureano Serres (Celler Mendall), one of the great references of natural wine, who was his mentor until he created Cos a Cos.

Before settling in Carrícola, Cristóbal started the project in Ontinyent, his home town, in the Vall d'Albaida, making wine by hand in the garage of the family home and recovering micro-plots and old or abandoned vineyards in the area. In 2024, the grower Vicent Tomàs Soler (Celler Vicent Tomàs) retired and handed over his winery in Carrícola, where Cos a Cos is now permanently established.

They're 100% natural wines —with no additions or added sulphites— with an almost unique chapter in the Valencian wine scene: their rancio wines, aged in oak barrels more than 50 years old.

A natural wine shop born in the territory

Terroir Radical isn't a generic natural wine shop. It's a selection built from Ontinyent, from first-hand knowledge of the growers and the soils they work. Every wine in the catalogue has passed a personal selection tasting: we know the producer, we've visited the vineyard and we understand why that wine deserves to be here.

The catalogue includes natural and minimal-intervention Mediterranean wines, with special attention to the Valencian Community and to the producers of the Vall d'Albaida, the Terres dels Alforins and el Comtat closest to us.
