Terroir Radical was born in Ontinyent, at the heart of the Vall d'Albaida. Seven of the wineries we select have their vines or their winery less than 30 km from Ontinyent — in the Vall d'Albaida, the Terres dels Alforins, la Costera and el Comtat. This is our km 0: local wine, tasted and chosen first-hand.
What 'km 0' means at Terroir Radical
The term km 0 comes from gastronomy: seasonal produce, bought directly from the person who makes it, with the shortest possible distance between origin and table. Applied to wine, for us it means something very specific — wineries whose vines and cellar are less than 30 kilometres from Ontinyent, which we can visit in a morning and whose vintage we know before it reaches the box.
It's not a marketinglabel. It's how we've built the selection from the start: walking the region's vineyards, talking to the producers and tasting with them. Proximity gives us information no distributor can offer.
The territory: Vall d'Albaida, Terres dels Alforins, la Costera and el Comtat
Ontinyent sits right at the heart of one of the densest concentrations of natural wine on the peninsula. Within a half-hour drive there's:
- The Vall d'Albaida — our own region. Carrícola, Ontinyent and the surrounding villages, with dry-farmed vines on clay and old vines.
- The Terres dels Alforins — the 600–750 m plateau between Fontanars dels Alforins, Moixent and La Font de la Figuera, where Monastrell finds the altitude and night-time cold that make it great. See the full guide to the Terres dels Alforins.
- La Costera and el Comtat — the neighbouring regions to the south, with minimal-intervention projects working mountain plots and recovered varieties.
In practice, each area has its own accent: in the Vall d'Albaida, led by Carrícola, it's mostly as its symbolic centre —a village of little more than a hundred people surrounded by organic farming and mountain art— what's made is mostly — spontaneous fermentations, no added sulphites or additives; in the Terres dels Alforins there's a mix of (Fontanars dels Alforins, Moixent, La Font de la Figuera) two schools coexist: projects of and natural wine, with wineries seeking precision by keeping corrections to the essential minimum. Both approaches have a place in our selection.
