The Valencian Community holds some of the oldest vineyards in the Mediterranean and native varieties found nowhere else in the world. Bobal, Monastrell, Merseguera, Forcallat. This is where the natural wine we select at Terroir Radical is born.

Why Valencia is natural wine country

The Mediterranean climate —dry summers, mild winters, sea breezes— naturally reduces fungal pressure on the vine. Less disease means less need for treatments. It's no coincidence that Valencia has an exceptional density of organic and biodynamic producers.

The altitudes of the Terres dels Alforins (450–750 m), the Alicante mountains of El Comtat or the Utiel-Requena plateaus add a thermal range that lengthens ripening and preserves natural acidity: the soul of a living wine.

Terroir Radical was born in Ontinyent (Vall d'Albaida), at the heart of this territory. It isn't a selection made from the outside: it's a view from within, with the knowledge of someone who lives in the landscape.

Monastrell

Native Valencian · All three provinces · Red

Valencia's great red grape. Thick skin, high anthocyanin content, drought-resistant. It gives deep, spicy wines with notable ageing potential in the hands of minimal-intervention viticulture.

Bobal

Native · Utiel-Requena · Red

Queen of Utiel-Requena. High acidity, deep colour and great character. When vinified with respect it produces fresh, direct wines with a unique personality: far from the heavy Mediterranean stereotype.

Merseguera

Native Valencian · All three provinces · White

An almost-vanished native Valencian white. A delicate grape with a floral aroma, it's experiencing a revival in the hands of natural producers rescuing its freshness and mineral tension.

Forcallat Tinta

Almost extinct · Terres dels Alforins · Red

An almost extinct variety, rehabilitated by wineries such as Celler del Roure. Light, aromatic, with lively acidity. Valencia's equivalent of Pinot Noir in character: elegant, difficult and revealing.

Rescued from oblivion by Pablo Calatayud. It exists only in the Terres dels Alforins. Its wines have a wild tension and a personality unlike anything else in the wine world.

Verdil

Native · Central Valencian regions · White

A high-acidity Valencian white. Historically present in the Clariano subzone of the D.O. Valencia. Aromatic, with herbal and citrus notes. One of the most interesting varieties in the Mediterranean's wine heritage.

Bonicaire

In recovery · Vall d'Albaida · La Costera · Red

A red actively being recovered in the Vall d'Albaida and la Costera, recognised by Slow Food. Light wines, with moderate alcohol and an herbal profile: their freshness connects directly with today's Mediterranean natural wine.

Tortosí

Native · Marina Alta · Serra de Mariola · White

An almost-forgotten white, found around the Marina Alta and the Serra de Mariola. Present in old-vine field blends, where it adds body and a saline undertone that natural producers are starting to reclaim.

Simeta

Exclusive · Terres dels Alforins · White

A white exclusive to the Terres dels Alforins, with a very long ripening cycle. In the hands of Javi Revert and Rafael Cambra it has produced some of the most acclaimed Valencian whites of the last decade.

Tardana

Native · Utiel-Requena · White

Native to Utiel-Requena, also known as Planta Nova. Harvested very late, it keeps its acidity into autumn and gives taut, bright, low-alcohol whites.

Planta Fina de Pedralba

Native Valencian · DOP Valencia · White

Documented in the Valencian Country since 1609, known locally as Faraná. Pablo Calatayud is its main champion: fine-textured, floral whites with a long finish.

Moscatel de Alejandría

Ancient Mediterranean · D.O. Valencia · White

One of the oldest documented varietal families, spread through the Mediterranean by the Phoenicians and Greeks. Vinified dry, with no residual sugar, it gives aromatic, unexpectedly fresh whites.

Where is Terroir Radical based?

Terroir Radical is based in Ontinyent (Vall d'Albaida, Valencia). We're an online shop specialising in natural, biodynamic and minimal-intervention Mediterranean wines, with a special focus on Valencian producers.

Do you ship to the city of Valencia?

Yes, we ship to the whole Valencian Community — the city of Valencia, Alicante, Castellón and the whole province. Orders go out on Tuesdays and Fridays via TIPSA. Check our shipping page for rates and delivery times.

What's the difference between organic wine and natural wine in Valencia?

Organic wine has official certification regulating vineyard treatments. Natural wine goes further: it involves spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, minimal or zero added sulphites, and no corrections or additives in the cellar. Many of the Valencian producers we select work in both dimensions at once.

What are the natural wine designations of origin in Valencia?

The main ones are D.O. Valencia (with the Clariano, Valentino and Moscatel de Valencia subzones), D.O. Utiel-Requena (the home of Bobal) and D.O.P. Alicante. Outside any designation, the Terres dels Alforins (Moixent, Fontanars, Ontinyent) hold a community of natural producers that's a national benchmark.
